On Wednesday 15 September 2021, environmental law expert Jessica den Outer will feature as a guest speaker for IofC’s ‘Faith in Human Rights’ project. This interview will conclude our series of online dialogues on human rights.

Jessica den OuterWhat is ‘ordinary’ environmental law? How did Den Outer make a tangible impact as an environmental lawyer? And how can we advocate for rights for nature? ‘We are on the brink of a breakthrough in environmental law: from nature as a thing without rights to rights for all life’, Den Outer says.

Den Outer initiated the petition ‘Maas in de Wet’, proposing that the river Maas should be recognized as a legal person. In 2019, the UN recognized her as an Earth-centered law expert. In 2020, she was listed amongst the top 100 most sustainable youth leaders in the Netherlands (DJ100).
